Stop Waking Residents to Prove They’re Safe

In aged care, we rightly focus on nutrition, hydration, medication, mobility, falls prevention and clinical governance. Yet one of the most powerful contributors to health and wellbeing is also one of the most routinely interrupted: sleep.
For older people, sleep is not simply rest. It supports physical recovery, immune function, cognition, mood, appetite and quality of life. Poor or fragmented sleep has been linked to increased falls risk, daytime fatigue, cognitive decline, mood disturbance and reduced resilience. Research has also shown that sleep disruption is common in long-term care settings, while studies such as Stone et al. in Archives of Internal Medicine have associated poor sleep efficiency and prolonged wake time with higher falls risk in older adults.
This matters because many aged care homes still rely heavily on manual night rounding. Staff enter rooms at scheduled intervals to check whether residents are safe, in bed, and breathing. The intention is good. The outcome can be problematic.
A door opens. Light enters the room. The carer moves on to the next resident. But the resident wakes. They realise they need the toilet. They attempt to stand while drowsy, disorientated, unsteady, or affected by postural blood pressure changes. In the darkness, they walk from bed to bathroom — one of the highest-risk moments of the night. Nocturia, poor lighting, reduced balance and medication effects are all recognised contributors to night-time falls.
